My first half marathon :: Lessons from an endurance sport

Half Marathon - Do I, Do I not?

Till the day preceding the run day, i was in dilemma should i or should i not.

Even though i had paid for the Thane Hiranandani Half Marathon organized to spread the awareness of Hockey - supposedly the national sport of India.

My training was not up to the mark; I had been working long hours in the preceding week; some outstation travel; plus the blood sugar levels after my new medication was not in good control (i am diabetic and on medication for the last 4 years plus a strict regimen of what i eat, when i eat and how i eat)

My wife accompanied me to the bib collection venue. My intention was to go pick up the goody bag along with the bib, and take rest on the Sunday. Why should I miss the opportunity to sleep longer on a wintry Sunday morning?

My wife was prodding me -- just give it a shot. When i saw the energy levels of other runners, who had come for bib collection, i had decided -- to run!

Night before the run:

The sleep was not sound.. There was palpable anxiety and i was tossing and turning in the bed, not getting good sleep.

BTW, i bought the proper running attire, only the night before the run.

The run day:

Got up at 4.30 am. It was like any other day where i need to rush to catch an early morning flight out of Mumbai. Kitted up myself and i got out of home. Oh boy! there was lot of dew and it was brrrr.. cold.. 18 degrees Celsius?

Lots of runners from all over Mumbai, but not even a person whom i know were there. But the energy levels of the event was infectious.

The run:
The run started at sharp six. First two kms were breeze. There were lots of runners -- young and old, novices and experienced athletes. Some 9000 of them.

Said to myself ** Slow down, slow down, it is an endurance race. that too a fairly long one**

The first two kms i was doing at 7 minutes to a km - so far so good.

The road out of Hiranandani Estate Thane, was a steep ascent and it was told in advance that the terrain is not an even one.

Run Strategy: Slow down when the road is climbing steep - perhaps even walk, and downhill course i MUST run, long strides to make use of the gravity, to propel forward.

** Lesson 1: Make best use of the environment. Use gravity when it is favourable to you.**

By the time i hit the 5km mark, i had been running for 31 minutes.

I had to constantly watch the pace, and slow down, as the tendency is to pick up pace (influence of other runners around) and I did not want to run out of breathe/energy..

Crossed the 7 km mark, in 46 minutes and I was getting into uncharted territory.

*** I am on my own. i have never done this distance in the last two decades **

The body was propelling in autonomous mode -- pace set by its own rhythm. Every runner has a sweet spot where the energy expended equals to the energy generated by the body.

Somewhere around 9 kms the road started uphill again. (Upwan lake). It was getting difficult to maintain pace. Legs felt like they were made of lead.

Had to cajole the body with rewards of walking 200 metres for reaching 7k mark.

In endurance sports, it is better to practice to separate the mind from the body.

With mounting pain, the mind keeps playing games -- stop, lets walk now. etc. Doggedly one needs to push the mind out of the way, and firmly command, just keep running.. Run, run and run.

*** It is me vs myself. Can you do it Vishy? Can you do it? ***

Reached the half way mark at exactly one hour and three minutes. Which means, i can finish the race in under two hours and fifteen minutes!! Real athletic performance. Hoorah!

The path became downhill and i was picking up pace.I was literally jubilant and so very positive. That was a moment of ecstasy leading to catharsis - breaking away of all kinds of mental barriers and super charged spirit shined through. I was never so positive!!

Km 14: There was this dull pain in the left knee (i injured the knee ten days back, when the foot slipped and the ankle twisted itself. The injury was what was keeping me away from training.) The pain was getting sharper.

Km 15: The pain was becoming unbearable. It was pinging every time i put weight on the left foot. I even stopped for a while to do some stretches.

Km 16: The downhill phase ended and the uphill started, lasting for another two kms at least.

I continued running, trying to shift the weight to my right foot and landing the left one softly. An awkward sight, but it gave some relief.

Meanwhile, the right thigh started to feel stiff as the weight shifting strategy started to work against it. Cramping started.

I had to start walking now.. The left leg was getting to become unusable. Ram rod straight it was refusing to bend at the knee. pain pain and pain...

I was slowing down and looking at the watch helplessly as the pace started to slow down to 10 minutes to a km. I was running two hours straight. 18 kms covered. 3 more to go.

The road was rising steep. I had to really push the pain out of my mind and keep walking. People started to overtake in droves. Dang helpless situation!

The distance to finish placards said 2 kms. Can i finish in two hour twenty?? Started to run in downhill (or what seemed descent) pushing myself hard.

Suddenly, the next placard read 3 kms instead of one.. What is going on?? Was the 2km placard a gimmick?

The road went straight uphill.. Legs were crying, left knee was literally busted... i was sweating more.. How much more pain can i handle?

I was hopping around; pace as good as crawling.. doing one km at 12 minutes!

i had thought of making a dash in the last one km.. i will deal with my knee later on.. the focus is on finishing the race before 2 hr 30 mins.

1 km to go placard came twice; in gaps of 500 m!! i had accelerated after the first 1-km--to-finish placard, and the pain came back with a vengeance, pulling me back. Every meter of movement required tremendous effort.

i had to slow down, when every body else around me were revving up to the finish line.

limping limping limping..

i saw the placard - finish line around 500 meters away.. the mind wanted to run, accelerate. The body was just not doing it. it was resisting as much as it could.

After much coaxing, cajoling, the body started to respond in the last 200 metres.. It was not blocking like it was doing between 14 to 20 kms. The pain vanished for an instance and i darted off.

The moment i crossed the finish line, i saw the clock -  2 hours 38 minutes.

Yesss!! i have done it.

The body was in writhing pain, especially the knee. The right side thigh now started to shiver and get into cramps..

The mind had stopped functioning. It was a tremendous victory of mind and the body - together.

An indescribable peace, positivity and calm descended all over.

For that feeling i will run 10 more marathons.

Valuable lessons from the marathon:

1. We are much more capable of doing more than what we think. Unless we try, we don't know what we can achieve. Trying is everything. The first step. i discovered long distance running when i was hitting 40 years in the calendar.

2. Use the situation to the advantage.I can not crib about the road going uphill. I need to make use of the downhill whenever it comes.

3. Just hang on and keep going till i get the favorable environment.

4. Focus. My job is to run. Keep running. The moment i start to pay attention to all and sundry, the energy to run, drains off mysteriously. i focused on the run, pushed the pain behind, and i could finish. On any other day, i would not have limped for 7 straight kms.

4. Strategy -- Life is a long road. I need to have a plan to maintain pace and keep doing the necessary course correction every now and then. I may not have started with a great plan, but it does not stop me from creating one, en route, as the situation unfolds.

5. It is always what i can do vs what i am. There is no tough competitor in the world other than one's own mind. The mind conceives, executes and even breaks down possibilities as impossibles!

Win the mind, win everything else.

Mind Works 3

(Continued from Mind Works 2)
Ok. Now, that I know how my sub-conscious mind works, how do I reduce my suffering? How do I release the pressure out of my subconscious design? How do I get back the joy; happiness? How do I restore my peace?

The ultimate objective of any living being is to live in peace and in harmony with its own natural state of existence.

It is humans, who have complicated our own lives and complicate others as well.

Bottom line is, as children below 3 years we smiled more, we were joyous, had the sparkle in our eyes and in a state of bliss.

As we grow, we have forgotten the art of being happy. We have forgotten the key to unlock the door to inner happiness.

We constantly seek out happiness externally. Seeking happiness externally leads to addictions of all kinds (more on this later) perennially trapping us in the cycle of exploitation.

To restore peace, we need to seek the source of the problem and address.

We need to unlearn.

Fact 1: In the moments of ecstasy, extreme happiness and intense experiences there is no thought. Mind stops. Even the ego collapses.

Corollary: The capacity to absorb an experience by the mind is limited. Mind keeps interfering with the experience, by bringing in the past and future.

Net result: loss of richness of the experience, while the mind saps the energy of the Self by oscillating between past to future endlessly.

When the experience is intense enough the mind is over ridden. Such, experiences transcends mind/thoughts directly.

But how? How do I transcend the mind? Where does the thought come from?

We need to go even deeper, perhaps to the bottom most part of the kettle.

The point where the liquid is in contact with the kettle. The point where the liquid absorbs the energy and cavitation happens; bubbles form almost simultaneously. The source of the transformation of the liquid.

That is the area of unconscious mind - a completely uncharted territory for a normal individual.

Yet, we have the derived experience of the unconscious mind almost every day. BTW, almost all of the content in this blog, has been experienced by almost all of us.

Unconscious mind is the source of feelings. There is no answer why we feel so in a particular way, for any particular incident.

Most of us have the wrong notion that the emotions control feelings. Mood disorders are not an outcome of what we think or the way we think.

Want proof? Ask a person in depression. He/she will have a direct experience of how mood affects their life, irrespective of their social status and external condition of their life.

It is a common scene to see a socially well off person with an agitated state of mind, riding in a chauffeur driven car where as, a person with hand to mouth existence, seems to be feeling on top of the world. Its a world of feelings at work.

Feelings are beyond the grasp of conscious and subconscious thought processes. The way you feel at any given time, can not be predicted, altered by thought processes.

Feelings are cyclical. They seem to have a pattern on their own.

Feelings are the gateway to the treasure trove to understanding self.

I will start with the end point objective - The source of the primary experience; the existential experience – the experience of ‘I’ or the self awareness.

Every living being – how much ever small or big, smart or dumb have the experience of the ‘I’ thought, all the time.

It is from the self awareness, all other thoughts and experience happens.

There is no world, without the sense of I. Every thing exists in relation to I.

If ‘I’ don’t exist, the world does not exist. It is that simple.

If does not exist, do you really care, if the world existed or not?

In fact, we create the world around us, starting with the seed of the ‘I’ thought/experience.

When we sleep, we slip from wakefulness (where all five senses operate, mind operates and of course there is the I) to dreamful state (all five senses are shut; mind operates and there is I)

In our deep dreamless sleep – when all the five senses are shut, mind is inactive and still there is only I).

If we don’t have that sense of ‘I’ during deep sleep, there is a likelihood of waking up as somebody else. (Tom going to sleep and waking up as Jerry).  Since such conversions of Tom to Jerry doesn’t happen, we can assume that our identity is preserved through the ‘I’ awareness, even during deep sleep.

Analogically similar to the Earth socket in an electrical circuit - Helps the neural circuit stay grounded.

I am sure, whatever I have spoken till now, every one has experienced and experiencing every day and night. (Insomniacs please excuse).

To digress, here are few experiences to observe:

During deep sleep, do you have the sense of the world? Are there problems? Are there health issues? Are there any issue with anyone at all!

We experience the proof every night that all the problems in the world are mind created, and nothing else.

Want more examples? How vividly are we able to dream where as in reality we can be on an entirely different plane of existence - dreaming of sunshine in Hawaii while sleeping in Alaska; a beggar dreaming of relishing a 8 course meal at the Waldorf.

That is the power of the mind. Anything is possible.

And mind is capable of imagining problems beyond proportions. Mind can throw up anxiety attacks; amplify issues; put on an endless spiral of negative and harmful thoughts/emotions.

Exercise 1: Next time when you dream, do you ever see your own face? All the references of self, mine are all only a referential or through the feeling of I.

Exercise 2: How old is your ‘I’? Does it age, ever?

To address life’s problems, we need to go back to the root thought ‘I’ and see if it exists there.

Because that is the only reality beyond which there is nothing!

To rectify our problems, we need to experience the I, as I itself.

I am not going narrate what happens when one experiences the source, I. No more fodder for thought.

I will write only few pointers to reach the I.

How?

1. Cultivate the power of concentration – not to get distracted with thought trains from interfering. Meditating on a sound, mantra or on an object, image, person helps.

With the power of concentration, one can penetrate the layers and layers of mind to reach the self; reach the I ness, and experience it directly.

2. Cultivate the feeling of love. I am not confusing with the word love that denotes loving someone or something.

Love and fear are the two basic feelings on which the entire ego complex gets constructed.

It is best to hold on to the feeling of love - whenever your heart feels so; as pure love itself - as gratitude; as thankfulness; as a natural feeling of being taken care of in life; as a natural feeling of being protected; being supported.

Love does miracles. It is THE Greatest force in earth and beyond.

Zen on the road

An empty open highway
biking to a place faraway
vroooming miles after miles
melting the rubber in wheels.
wind on the face
thanks to the pace.

the sky is azure
my mind is clear
sunny and cloudless
The mind gone away thoughtless

Ahoy!
Heart bobs with joy

In the bike thatz vrooming
Phut came the bloom
And the heart's blossom

I am in harmony
I need no money
It does not buy joy

Oh! boy!
Happiness is in
being here and now!
wowow!

Leave back your mind
on the wind
Down to the roads
Along with the toads

Satori on a Suzuki!

Oh! Fish

Mind Works II

Hence, it is important to watch our mind and what we are bringing from the subtle sub-conscious world to the physical world.  How do we do that? How do we heal the mind?

I am getting back to blogging after considerable amount of time. Mind works II is posted after considerable delay.

The fundamental objective of any living being is BEING HAPPY.

What IS happiness?
What BRINGS happiness?

I bet very few of us have ever thought about these questions – leave alone finding answers. We just take happiness for GRANTED.

On the other extreme is suffering.

What IS suffering?
What BRINGS misery?

I bet this is an easy question.

I am suffering because of ………… (my boss, my relationship with so-and-so., my situation at work/home/in-between, and so on. You may fill in the blanks with your own)

Ah! Everyone has got few or many things to write about.

It is as if suffering is given; Inevitable. Not an option. It is never a choice.

And it is the suffering we always run away from, all the life – proactively and reactively. And there are few clever business people who write, talk about eliminating suffering and make millions of dollars in the process.

Am I one of them? No, certainly not. I am also a co-sufferer like you. What makes me more qualified is, I perhaps suffered more and hence I tried to find a bit more about how mind works.

Fundamentals first, But what is happiness and what is suffering?

Both are states of mind. Ok. Umm.. Sounds simple? But why do I suffer more than being happy? Why do I suffer more than others?

Now, we need to dig deep into understanding what causes different state of mind and how mind works.

Hey, I am not a psychiatrist (or psychologist?) or a MD. So, do not expect to babble medical or para medical terminologies.

It is very simple to understand. And hence, many of us just ignore - Never have bothered to look at it deeply.

Let’s draw the analogy of water boiling in a kettle, placed in a stove.

Conscious mind – This is the top most layer of the water in the kettle. We can visualize lots of bubbles exploding on the surface, releasing steam. It is never calm. It is the place of visible action.

The analogy is good enough to understand what happens in our conscious mind.

We are battered by thoughts, more and more thoughts, coming up every moment like bubbles. Conscious mind is through which we learn, memorize and our day to day existence depends heavily on the conscious mind.

If the conscious mind is better organized, it will do wonders.

But, for most of us, it is always not the case. We don’t know why we feel in a particular way. Why we get angry? Why we feel jubilant? Why are we elated? Why we feel depressed? Why we feel victimized? Why there are mood swings?

The emotions are always there and the surface of the conscious mind has one or more emotions breaking surface by way of memories, or interpretations of the world around us. The conscious mind is a battlefield of the emotions of the past or the future.

How much ever, we try to calm the mind; the mind always seems to have a way on its own and carries on with its own business; never in control; Very difficult to stay calm; focused and relaxed.

I hope you have experienced what I am saying, right?

It is suffering when mind is agitated; Confused; full of emotions. It is a damn chaotic place.

Exercise:

Where do this thought bubbles come from?
How do I control?
Why I calm some times and why am I agitated more often?
Why do I think in a particular way?

The answer lies not in the surface, but little deeper. Lets go.

Subconscious mind:

As an analogy it is the layer that starts near the bottom of the kettle and extends up to the layer below the surface of the water.

It is the area where the bubbles emerge from the bottom, gradually expand as they rise and builds momentum near the surface.

What if we try to put a mesh filter or a spoon in the kettle and block the bubble path?

The bubbles simply circumvent the spoon and continue to rise up. The bubbles always try to find the shortest path of escape.

What if we try to block the bubble path entirely?

The bubbles accumulate below the block and with time, they build enough momentum and energy to push the blockade out of their way.

If there is sufficient heat, and the blockage is not removed, the result is a pressure cooker situation. It can lead to an explosion also!

The sub conscious mind is no different.

The subconscious mind is the area what holds our identity of what I am, who I am to whom, ego, likes, dislikes, afflictions, etc.   This is the mind that is not normally seen or observed. It comes out during our sleep, as dreams.

I am not going to bring up Freud and other mind experts here. I assure, you, it is not very difficult to comprehend either.

All you need to understand is, many of the things we consciously do not know, why we feel so, come from subconscious mind.

Many times when we question our own behavior of why I did something that way, have their answers in the subconscious mind.

Point is, we never bothered to peep in to the dark areas of our own mind.

The subconscious layer is actually very deep – like an ocean.

Now, linking the analogy with the mind:

The subconscious mind produces thought bubbles - Random thoughts to start with.

And every one of us has a sub-conscious design on our own. (Call it DNA/genetics or the basic personality).

The subconscious design act like a filter in the kettle and it blocks some thought bubbles and it allows some thought bubbles to escape out.

In real life, we are born with a set pattern of subconscious mind. Only it is a matter of time that the subconscious mind gets revealed /manifested, bit by bit.

It is the set subconscious design pattern that traps thought bubbles. With time, the thought bubbles start accumulating on the design.

The random thoughts become thoughts with (sub conscious) attention.

With more time, the traps store considerable amount of energy waiting to be released or waiting to burst the trap open.

The trap holds enough energy that the thoughts with subconscious attention have become recurring thought patterns.

The subconscious mind is always active and absorbing stimuli from the external environment and suggests back our response to the external environment.

Why some children are optimistic?
Why some children are pessimistic?
Why we fear certain things?
Why we avoid certain incidents? Why we like some? Dislike some?

The subconscious design with its associated recurring thought patterns create its own pattern of learning, self-image and sets us how we react/respond to the conscious world.

When the thought bubbles explode, they rise to the conscious mind as an emotional outburst – anger, sadness, rage, despair, joy etc.

The net result is SUFFERING as seen from the conscious mind.

Ok. Now, that I know how my subconscious mind works, how do I reduce my suffering? How do I release the pressure out of my subconscious design?

(To be continued)
